Plant fingerprints in the deep Earth
نویسندگان
چکیده
The colonization of Earth landmasses by vascular plants around 430 million years ago substantially impacted erosion and sediment transport mechanisms. This left behind fingerprints in magmatic rocks, linking the evolution Earth’s biosphere with its internal processes.

Spectral fingerprints of Earth-like planets around FGK stars.
We present model atmospheres for an Earth-like planet orbiting the entire grid of main sequence FGK stars with effective temperatures ranging from Teff=4250 K to Teff=7000 K in 250 K intervals. We have modeled the remotely detectable spectra of Earth-like planets for clear and cloudy atmospheres at the 1 AU equivalent distance from the VIS to IR (0.4 to 20 μm) to compare detectability of featur...
متن کاملThe Deep Impact Earth-based Campaign
Prior to the selection of the comet 9P/Tempel 1 as the Deep Impact mission target, the comet was not well observed. From 1999 through the present there has been an intensive world-wide observing campaign designed to obtainmission critical information about the target nucleus, including the nucleus size, albedo, rotation rate, rotation state, phase function, and the development of the dust and g...
متن کاملInterrogating the Deep Earth with USArray
Investigating the deep, inaccessible realms within Earth is important since questions regarding the dynamics and evolution of the coupled crust-mantle and mantle-core systems cannot be answered without detailed knowledge of the interior. Active debate on a number of topics indicates that fundamental questions remain unresolved, such as the origin depth of mantle plumes that give rise to hot spo...
متن کاملDiamonds and water in the deep Earth: a new scenario
Earth is a water planet, but how much water exists on and in the Earth? Is the water limited to the Earth’s surface and limited depths of our planet (molecular water of the hydrosphere), or do deep reservoirs of hydrogen and oxygen really exist as proposed in recent works but not yet proven? Due to the importance of H2O for life and geological processes on the Earth, these questions are among t...
متن کاملDirect measures of lateral velocity variation in the deep Earth
[1] Current tomographic models of the Earth display perturbations to a radial stratified reference model. However, structures in the deep mantle that are chemically dense with low Rayleigh numbers can develop enormous relief, perhaps with boundaries closer to vertical than to radial. Such features are hard to detect with present tomographic modeling techniques because the timing anomalies are b...
